Metals & Mining Summit
The surge in demand for critical minerals is reshaping the economies of producing countries. But it’s also leading to rising geopolitical tensions, as governments compete to secure reliable sources of these materials. China’s overseas investments in metals and mining have hit record highs. At the same time, Western governments have only just woken up to the strategic importance of securing domestic supplies of critical minerals. Meanwhile, the Gulf states are pursuing a multi-pronged and multi-million dollar strategy, which includes direct investments in established mining operations across Asia and Africa, and joint ventures to process raw materials domestically.
Despite growing demand and government support, the mining industry finds it hard to attract the long-term investment needed for new mines. The value chain is disparate and misaligned. It can’t shake the perception that it disregards nature and biodiversity. And it often lacks the support and approval of the communities in which it operates in order to be successful and sustainable.
The FT’s Metals and Mining Summit includes two days of high-level content, curated and moderated by leading FT journalists. The programme includes insightful interviews with CEOs from major mining companies, complemented by productive and meaningful networking opportunities. Discussions will confront the challenges and opportunities facing the sector across geopolitics, supply and demand, technology and innovation, finance and investment.
